Depicting
holy people and significant events, icons evolved in the early
church and later flourished in the Eastern Orthodox world.
In recent years western Christians have come to appreciate the
significance and spiritual richness of this art. In this
retreat, participants will paint one complete icon. No
experience necessary, and all materials are included in the
cost. An atmosphere of silence and contemplation are
essential to the art of 'writing' and icon. |

Sr. Maryam Gossling is the 'Artist in Residence' at
Prairiewoods Spirituality Center in Hiawatha, IA. She has an MFA
from the University of Wisconsin, an MA in Arts Education from
Ohio State University and has studied with Master Iconographer,
Philip Zimmerman. |

At 10:45 she will share her recent experience of living in
silence and solitude with the Trappistine monks in the
wilderness at Redwoods Monastery on the Lost Coast of Northern
California. |

Her presentation will probe how your own search for God might
intersect with her experience, and a Q & A session will follow. |

A $20 donation is suggested with all proceeds going toward
the creation of a new website which will help market Villa Maria
to the world. Child care will be provided. |
